Now and then in Baltimore:
Three years ago this week riots in Baltimore wreaked havoc in the city, including the complete destruction of the Mary Harvin Senior Center. The center was a highly anticipated development we had spearheaded to provide senior housing with supportive services through a partnership with the Southern Baptist Church. We were thrilled to be nearly halfway complete with the $15 million, 61-unit complex. Then the riots and fires came. They were devastating to the city – in property and morale – and a blow to our company’s efforts to provide housing and renewal where it is needed most.
But there was a terrific and triumphant progression in that story. One year later we opened The Mary Harvin Senior Center just a month after the intended completion date. It has been serving east Baltimore’s seniors ever since.
Today we are proud to be part of this “now and then” look-back by the Baltimore Sun.
